Atlas South Sea Pearl operates pearl oyster farms in the marine waters of Bali, Lombok and Alyui Bay, Waigeo (Raja Ampat), under varying agreements. Since pearl oysters are totally reliant on the sea environment for their survival, Atlas is committed to the best environmental practices. In Bali, Atlas has actively assisted in coral reef and mangrove rehabilitation work and shore erosion. The Company has developed a recycling venture with half the proceeds going to a staff loan facility. In 2007, Atlas supervised the building of a dedicated conservation ship, which supports the work of Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy in Raja Ampat. Ocean patrols established by Atlas have led to the cessation of fish bombing and poisoning on reefs within the Company’s influence. In addition, Atlas seeks to make a meaningful contribution to local communities. Atlas is a major employer in some of South East Asia’s most remote regions. The Company is involved with assisting in the education of local school children through the provision of scholarships and assistance in maintaining and rebuilding school infrastructure. In Indonesia, the Company directly employs over 500 people. To ensure the spread of benefit, the Company consciously enacts a recruitment program targeting local community and over 80% of the staff employed at the pearl farms is from local villages.
